On March 8 last year the flight from Kuala Lumpur vanished off the radar at 2.20am after deviating from its course over the South China Sea to Beijing just an hour after take off.

Military radar last tracked it over the Andaman Sea but since then nobody knows what has happened to the Boeing 777 and its 227 passengers and 12 crew.

No debris has ever been found, not even a floating lifejacket, and many conspiracy theories have arisen from the mysterious disappearance.

However Byron Bailey, a professional commercial pilot with 26,000 hours of flying time, believes he has solved the mystery - and says most of the piloting community believes the same.

Writing in Australian newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, Mr Bailey said someone hijacked the aircraft, turned all communication equipment off over the South China Sea, flew the plane west towards Penang and reprogrammed the Flight Management System (FMS) to fly into the southern Indian Ocean.

The former Emirates Airline captain, said: "Who reprogrammed the FMS? Try to find a B777 captain who will tell you differently, because only a qualified jet pilot could have inserted manually defined waypoints of latitude and longitude into the FMS, as there are no airways leading to the southern Indian Ocean."
